Hansie Cronje's South Africans downed the Adam Holioake-led English team 2-1, a result that led to the former's sacking in favour of Alec Stewart at the end of the series.
All rounders Jacques Kallis and Lance Klusener were outstanding with strong support from Jonty Rhodes.
