Kevin Pietersen made the highest score by an England captain in India helping England recover after two early wickets.
Pietersen shared a stand of 102 with Alastair Cook 50 and 149 with Andrew Flintoff 62.
England closed the day on 282-6, 171 runs adrift of India.
