Lower order hitting from Robin Peterson (84) hauled South Africa back into the game as they resumed on 139 for five to post 326.

In reply, Dale Steyn took two early wickets as Pakistan were wobbling at 45-3 but Azhar Ali and captain Misbah-ul-Haq shared a largely cautious unbeaten partnership of 55 to see Pakistan through to the close.

Pakistan 338 and 100 for 3 lead South Africa 326 (Peterson 84, de Villiers 61, Ajmal 6-96) by 112 runs.
