Joe Root kicks off captaincy with classy century: 1st Test, Day 1 (Lords)

Joe Root started his England Test captaincy with a stunning 184 not out.

Root's century turned a shaky 76-4 into 357-5 at stumps. Root was fortunate to be dropped on 16 and was later reprieved by a no-ball when stumped on 149.

Vernon Philander (3-46) impressed for South Africa, removing both England openers and Jonny Bairstow cheaply.

England 357 for 5 (Root 184*, Moeen 61*, Stokes 56, Philander 3-46) v South Africa.

July 2017.
