Kohli, Kumar heroics fire India to brink: 1st Test, Day 5 (Kolkata)

Skipper Virat Kohli hit his 50th international century and paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up four wickets to give a nervous Sri Lanka a scare before the rain-hit opening Test ended in a tense draw.

Kohli held together the Indian batting to register his 18th Test century (104 not out) and set a target of 231 for the visitors to win the Test.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami then struck regularly as Sri Lanka collapsed to 75 for 7 before bad light halted play in fiery circumstances.

Sri Lanka 294 (Herath 67, Mathews 52, Thirimanne 51, Bhuvneshwar 4-88, Shami 4-100) and 75 for 7 (Bhuvneshwar 4-8) drew with India 172 (Pujara 52, Lakmal 4-26) and 352 for 8 dec. (Kohli 104*, Dhawan 94, Rahul 79, Shanaka 3-76, Lakmal 3-93).
