West Indies - A far cry from the glory days

Kingston, 12 Feb 2011: Preview of West Indies

Predicted win odds: 40%

The West Indies were the initial kings of World Cup cricket after taking out the 1975 and 1979 cups. Its been a long wait since then. In 2007 as hosts, they bowed out in the Super 8’s tamely as Brian Lara retired. Their World Cup win-loss record is 35-21, with 1 No Result. Darren Sammy captains the team and former paceman Ottis Gibson is the coach. Chris Gayle, and Darren Bravo hold the key to Windies success. Batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan and wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin - who were both not named in the recently-cancelled One-Day International series in Sri Lanka, are named in the squad.

Strengths: Gayle, Sarwan, Chanderpaul and Bravo provide a good batting combination on paper if they click. Kemar Roach could be handful earlier on.

Weaknesses: A lack of recent form continues to hinder the winners of the first two tournaments. Lack of genuine spinners, and luck lustre fielding continues to be a blight on the success of the West Indies in these tough conditions.
