In the opening match of the 198788 Benson Hedges Cup Australian beat Sri Lanka by 81 runs on a spiced up WACA pitch. Steve Waugh was man of the match with a quickfire 35 and 334. Sri Lanka made just 168 in the 45th over as they failed well short of Australia's 2497. A youthful Aravinda de Silva took 358 as Boon 56 and Dean Jones 55 made solid contributions.
