Rain saves Aussies after Guptill heroics: 5th ODI (Gabba)

Rain saved Australia against New Zealand with a washout with the Kiwis on their way to a win.

This no result ensured Australia retained the ChappellHadlee Trophy after it was tied 22. Martin Guptill spanked 64 not out off just 34 balls.

The Kiwis needed just 33 runs from 36 balls chasing a revised 20overs target of 156 with four wickets in hand when the umpires Steve Bucknor and Rod Tucker reluctantly pulling the stumps after persistent rain.

Earlier Brad Haddin and newboy Callum Ferguson rescued Australia with a century stand for the 5th wicket.

a great game with a sad ending alas. with everyone except ricky ponting (haha) recognising that the momentum was with the kiwis. on the result though, such is cricket. aussie were saved on this occasion but on another day it might have been nz or any other international team. i wonder if cricket will go the way of some other sports and have covered stadiums.
