1982: Last wicket drama but Aussies regain Ashes

Inspired by Geoff Lawson's 34 wickets and a big century on debut from South Africanborn Kepler Wessels Australia won back the Ashes after five years in English hands. Greg Chappell took over from Kim Hughes as captain while the England team was weakened by the enforced omission of their South African tour rebels particularly Graham Gooch and John Emburey. Australia went 2–0 up after three Tests but England won the Fourth Test by 3 runs after a 70run last wicket stand in dramatic fashion with Chris Tavare parrying a catch to teammate Geoff Miller in the slips to set up the final decider. The last test was drawn to hand the Ashes to Australia but it will be remembered for a crucial runout off John Dyson that was not given out. 198283.
