Strauss and Cook in stunning fightback: 1st Test, D4 (Gabba)

Skipper Andrew Strauss (110) and Cook (132 not out) shared a record opening stand of 188 and defied the odd to take the tourists to 309-1 at close, an overall lead of 88.

After losing Strauss, Cook mixed watchful defence with purposeful strokeplay, and, expertly backed up by Jonathan Trott ( 54 not out), made sure England reached the close without further damage.

England will be aiming to repeat their effort of the first Ashes Test in Cardiff last year when they were outplayed but some last-pair resistance allowed them to hold on for a draw and eventually claim the series 2-1.
