Career in Profile: Talking Cricket with Aravinda de Silva

Aravinda de Silva discusses his career for Sri Lanka that spanned from 1984 to 2003. From his early days in international cricket when he was dubbed "Mad Max" for throwing his wicket away when set, to his career defining century in the 1996 World Cup Final, Aravinda has always been seen as one of the most skillful batsman of his generation. On the dark side, Aravinda De Silva was cited as a potential match fixer in allegations documented in the ICC report post the Hansie Cronje scandal in the early 2000's - these allegations were never properly examined after the SL Board elected to sweep it under the carpet. These match fixing allegations were raised again by former SL skipper and school mate Hashan Tillekeratne recently. Sept 2011

Hey, Aravinda was definitely a suspicious character. He was a superb bat but kept on throwing his wicket against the run of play far too often for my liking.

Did not know that the ICC was onto his match fixing. What a cheat

Yes, the ICC had him named in their match fixing report after the Cronje affair ten years ago. The SL Board did nothing about it then and quietly swept this under the carpet.

Great batsman. But he match fixing rumours were always buzzing around him. I think he was on the take.

Oh, I never knew Aravinda was involved in match fixing. It all makes sense now. I recall the Sri Lankan collapse against Australia in 1992. They had around 30 to make at tea to win, and Aravinda kept on hitting the ball in the air on a mad max charge when there was plenty of time.

yes go to agree. He was Lanka's best batsman for over a decade - but used this to inluence the outcomes for bookies and made a fortune over the years.
