South Africa scent win despite Mathews fight: 1st Test, Day 4 (Port Elizabeth)

South Africa need five wickets to complete victory after Sri Lanka provided dogged resistance and were 240 for five at stumps.

Youngster Kusal Mendis (58) and captain Angelo Mathews (58 not out) were defiant chasing an imposing target of 488 to win after South Africa had declared after an hour of batting in the morning.

Sri Lanka 205 and 240 for 5 (Mendis 58, Mathews 58*) need another 248 runs to beat South Africa 286 and 406 for 6 dec (Cook 117, de Kock 69, du Plessis 67*, Elgar 52).
