Ball tampering: Smith under fire to resign captaincy (Newlands)

Former skipper Michael Clarke and many others slammed Australian captain Steve Smith and senior players for hatching a plan to tamper with the ball during the third Test against South Africa.

Cameron Bancroft was first seen taking something out of his pocket and rubbing the ball in the palm of his hand. He was then confronted by umpires Nigel Llong and Richard Illingworth.

Bancroft later admitted to the offence and was charged by match officials. Smith said he would not be standing down as Australian captain. But it is hard to see how Smith can survive under mounting outrage from fans and critics in Australia.

3rd Test, March 2018.
