Ball tampering: Smith and Warner step down, Paine takes over (Newlands)

In a shock move, Steve Smith and David Warner have stood down as captain and vice-captain for the remainder of the third Test with Tim Paine taking over as the acting captain.

Smith was universally condemned after admitting he had authorised Cameron Bancroft to use tape to interfere with the ball in a bid to create reverse-swing.

"Cricket Australia and Australian cricket fans expect certain standards of conduct from cricketers representing our country, and on this occasion these standards have not been met," Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said in the statement.
