Jos Buttler was on fire, hitting 150 off 77 deliveries. England then went on to break the record for most sixes in an innings.
But the Windies fought back, with Gayle hitting 14 sixes of his own, and becoming the first player to pass 500 international sixes.
England won by 29 runs to edge 2-1 ahead in the series.
Earlier, England posted 418-6 as they hit a world record 24 sixes, highlighted Buttler’s brutal innings of 150 (77) and captain Eoin Morgan’s 103 (88).
Buttler alone cleared the boundary 12 times, as England piled on an incredible 154 runs in the final 10 overs.
England 418 for 6 (Buttler 150, Morgan 103, Hales 82, Bairstow 56) beat West Indies 389 (Gayle 162, Bravo 61, Brathwaite 50, Rashid 5-85, Wood 4-60) by 29 runs.
