Dimuth, Thirimanne record stand has win in sight: 1st Test, Day 4 (Galle)

Openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne were involved in a record opening stand of 133 runs that set the stage for a win over New Zealand.

Karunaratne hit only two boundaries in his patient 71no, while Thirimanne stroked four in his 57no before bad light stopped play with the hosts needing 135 more runs to win.

Earlier, NZ posted 285 as Watling went on to post the highest Test score by a Black Caps wicketkeeper in Sri Lanka before falling for 77.

Sri Lanka 133 for 0 (Karunaratne 71*, Thirimanne 52*) and 267 need 135 more runs to beat New Zealand 249 and 285 (Watling 77, Embuldeniya 4-99).
