Mathews holds off England with fighting ton: 2nd Test, Day 1 (Galle)

Former skipper Angelo Mathews stroked a defiant century to prevent England's bowlers running through the Sri Lankan batting.

After winning the toss, the hosts were 76-3 after James Anderson struck thrice.

Mathews put on 117 with Dinesh Chandimal (52), another former skipper, to repair the damage. He hit a measured 107 not out as Sri Lanka closed on 229-4.

Sri Lanka 229 for 4 (Mathews 107*, Chandimal 52, Dickwella 19*, Anderson 3-24) vs England.
