Australia’s famed top order collapsed as New Zealand overcame a horror start on a grim day to hand Australia their fifth-biggest T20 defeat.
Rookie Devon Conway (99no) rescued NZ after a shaky start and the wrist spin of India-born Ish Sodhi (4-28) decimated Australia.
Pacemen Trent Boult (2-22) and Tim Southee (2-10) cut through Australia’s top order, leaving them at 19-4. Mitch Marsh (45) posted his top T20 score to restore some respectability before Sodhi spun out the lower order.
New Zealand 184 for 5 (Conway 99*, Phillips 30, J Richardson 2-31) beat Australia 131 (Marsh 45, Sodhi 4-28, Southee 2-10, Boult 2-22) by 53 runs.
