Root leads fightback, England sniff win: 1st Test, Day 3 (Lords)

Former skipper Joe Root gave England hope of a stunning upset win on a gripping third day against New Zealand.

Chasing a demnandinb 277, England reached 216-5, needing another 61 runs.

Stokes was out for 54 after combining with former skipper Root (77) to drag England from 54-4. Root added 57 with Ben Foakes at stumps.

England 141 (Crawley 43, Southee 4-55) and 215 for 5 (Root 77*, Stokes 54, Jamieson 4-79) are 62 behind New Zealand 132 (de Grandhomme 42*, Potts 4-13, Anderson 4-66) and 285 (Mitchell 108, Blundell 96)
