Vintage Root century leads stunning win over NZ: 1st Test, Day 4 (Lords)

Joe Root's superbly crafted century led England to a five-wicket win in the first Test against New Zealand.

Root (115 not out) batted masterfully to also became the second England batter after Sir Alastair Cook to reach 10,000 Test runs.

Starting at 216-5 overnight, Root's unbeaten sixth-wicket stand of 120 with Ben Foakes (32 not out) defied the NZ pace attack to score the 61 runs required for a famous win.

England 141 (Crawley 43, Southee 4-55) and 279 for 5 (Root 115*, Stokes 54, Jamieson 4-79) beat New Zealand 132 (de Grandhomme 42*, Potts 4-13, Anderson 4-66) and 285 (Mitchell 108, Blundell 96)
