Born in Auckland on September 14, 1958, Jeff John Crowe was a right handed middle order batsman and New Zealand captain. He was the elder brother of the famous batsman Martin Crowe and cousin of actor Russel Crowe.
Crowe made his first class debut for South Australia against the touring Indian side in 1977. It was an inauspicious start as he scored a naught and one. However his Shield debut was impressive and he scored 48 and 54.
He crossed back across the Tasman in 1982/83 and made his ODI debut for New Zealand against Australia in 1983. He made his Test debut against Sri Lanka also in 1983, scoring 12.
In April 1987, Crowe scored a ton at Colombo in his first Test as New Zealand captain. Crowe captained the side in six Tests, winning none. In ODIs, from 16 matches, he won 4 matches.
Crowe retired in 1992. He played 39 Tests, scoring 1601 runs at 26.25 with 3 centuries. His highest score was 128 versus England. He also scored 1518 runs in ODIs at an average of 25.73 with a highest score of 88.
After retirement, Crowe was the manager of NZ cricket from 1999-2003. He subsequently become a renowned ICC match-referee.
