John Reid was an elegant left-hander known for his skill against spin bowling. He was the cousin of Australian fast bowler Bruce Reid.

Reid's 108 at on the fast, bouncy Gabba pitch in 1985 was instrumental in New Zealand's win by an innings of 41 runs. He shared a then-record 225-run partnership with Martin Crowe (188) for the third wicket which helped New Zealand to 553-7 in its only innings.

Reid played in 19 Tests and 25 ODIs between 1979 and 1986. His Test average was 46.28 and included six Test centuries.

Reid passed away in 2020 aged 64, after a long battle with cancer.
