Mark Richardson was born on June 11, 1971 in Hastings, Hawke's Bay.
He was a left arm spinner who transformed himself to be a sound left handed opening batsman. He made his Test debut aged 29 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in 2000.
In 2004, Richardson padded up in the first Test against England and played two of the slowest innings ever seen at Lords. The cautious opener - nicknamed Rig as in rigor mortis - fell for 93 in a 266-ball first-innings effort, and was determined to go seven runs better in the second dig.
Richardson's wish of having his name engraved on the Lord's honours board was granted following his 101, but having taken 309 balls to get there the home of cricket will have remembered better centuries. "At times I wish I was Adam Gilchrist. It was pretty dour and miserable, poking and prodding really," he said afterwards.
Despite a late start to his career, Richardson represented New Zealand in 38 Tests, scoring an impressive 2,776 runs with an average of 44.7.
After retiring, Richardson become a popular commentator for SkySports in NZ.
