Mark Butcher: Entertaining opener

Butcher, Mark A

Mark Butcher was born in Croydon, Surrey. His father was former England Test Player - Alan Butcher - and his mother was Jamaican. He father-in-law was Mickey Stewart and his Brother-in-law was his team mate, Alec Stewart when he was married to Judy Stewart.

Butcher made his Test debut against Australia in the 1st Test in 1997 and his last Test against South Africa in 2004.

In his most notable innings, Butcher powered England’s second-highest successful run-chase during the fourth Test at Headingley during the 2001 Ashes. After Australia put up 447 in their first innings, England responded with just 309. Australia then declared at 176 for 4, leaving England 315 to win in their fourth-innings chase. Coming in at No. 3, Butcher put on 181 with Nasser Hussain for the third wicket, and then 75 with Mark Ramprakash. Butcher remained unbeaten on 173 as England cantered to the target with six wickets in hand.

Butcher played 71 Tests, averaging 34.58, scoring 4288 runs with 8 centuries. In his first-class career, Butcher amassed 17,870 runs at 40.70 with a career-best 259. He was also a very useful medium-pace bowler - until his knees started playing up - and captured 125 first-class wickets at 33.89. In one-day cricket he averaged 31.85 but never won an ODI cap for England.
