Born in Cape Province, South Africa to English parents, Allan Lamb first played first-class cricket for Western Province.
In 1978 he was signed as an overseas player by Northamptonshire.
At 5ft 8in and 12 stone he was a pocket battleship of a batsman, and he always seemed to be at his best and most determined when facing the fast bowlers.
After making his Test debut in 1982, Lamb made 107 against India at the Oval in his third Test. He established himself in the England middle order for the next decade.
He showed his true potential against West Indies in 1984, making 110 at Lord's, 100 at Headingley and 100 not out at Old Trafford against the quartet of fast bowlers at their peak. He also made 107 against Sri Lanka at Lord's to cap off a brilliant season in 1984.
He was an aggressive batsman with a correct technique. He wasn't afraid to have a chat with the bowlers to upset their rhythm.
Lamb captained England on three occasions. Overall, he played in 79 Test matches, scoring 4,656 runs and 14 centuries.
