Archibald Campbell MacLaren was born on December 1, 1871 in Whalley Range, Manchester, Lancashire and died on November 17, 1944 at Warfield Park, Bracknell, Berkshire (aged 72 years 352 days).
He was a classical right-handed batsman who had a high backlift and a wide array of strokes
After making his first class debut for Lancashire in 1890 making 108 against Sussex, he became captain in 1894. He also made his Test debut for England in 1894. He took over the English captaincy from WG Grace against Australian in 1899
Maclaren reached a 1000 first class runs in a season on 9 occasions - including once in Australia. He also made 424 against Somerset in 1895. This was the highest first class score in England until Brian Lara surpassed him with his 500 in 1994
Maclaren played 35 Test matches and was captain in 22. He made 5 centuries and made 1931 runs. He led the England to defeat in four Ashes series against Australia, an inglorious record that still stands
