Debutant Atkinson takes 12 wicket haul, Anderson retires: 1st Test, Day 3 (Lords)

Gus Atkinson was the star as James Anderson ended his 21 year Test career in England’s crushing innings victory over West Indies in the first Test.

Paceman Atkinson had Alzarri Joseph held at long leg to become the first England bowler to take a 10-wicket haul on Test debut since John Lever in 1976. He finished with 5-61 for a match bag of 12 wickets in his debut match.

Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker with 704 Test victims ended with 3-32 to complete a rout of the Windies.

England 371 (Crawley 76, Smith 70, Root 68, Pope 57, Brook 50, Seales 4-77) beat West Indies 121 (Atkinson 7-45) and 136 (Atkinson 5-61, Anderson 3-32) by an innings and 114 runs.
