Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya was charged by the International Cricket Council with two breaches of its anti-corruption code.
As part of multiple concurrent ICC investigations into match fixing in Sri Lankan cricket, Jayasuriya was charged with “failure or refusal to co-operate” with an ongoing ICC investigation into alleged match-fixing in the country, as well as “concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant”.
Jayasuriya was player of the tournament as Sri Lanka won the World Cup in 1996 and he retired from international cricket in 2011, but continued his involvement as Chairman of Selectors.
The charges against Jayasuriya relate to his role as Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors, which ended in August 2017, not long after the Sri Lankans had surprisingly lost a one-day series at home to Zimbabwe.
