Moeen, Leach inspire historic whitewash over SL: 3rd Test, Day 4 (SSC)

Sri Lanka's last pair put on a record stand of 58 and ensured a tense finish before England completed a first series whitewash in Sri Lanka with a narrow 42-run victory.

Earlier, Kusal Mendis hit a superb 86 before he was needlessly run out against the run play. Roshen Silva made a patient 65 but the home side were on the ropes at 226-9.

Last man Pushpakumara hit 42 to narrow the margin. His stand of 58 with skipper Lakmal was a record 10th wicket stand against England but he fell straight after the tea break. Moeen Ali (4-92) and Jack Leach (4-72) led the way with spin as Sri Lanka were finally bowled out for 284.

England 336 (Bairstow 110, Stokes 57, Sandakan 5-95) and 230 (Buttler 64, Dilruwan 5-88) beat Sri Lanka 240 (Karunaratne 83, de Silva 73, Rashid 5-49) and 284 (Mendis 86, Roshen 65, Leach 4-72, Moeen 4-92) by 42 runs.
