The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

1936/37 Ashes

Gubby Allen led England on their tour to Australia in 1936/37. He had a job to repair the damage done when the previous Bodyline series in 1932/33 almost severed diplomatic relations between England and Australia.

The series marked Don Bradman’s first series as Australian captain, having taken over from Bill Woodfull. The dramatic turnaround from 0-2 to 3-2 remains unique in Test cricket - no other team has successfully won a five-match series after losing the first two Tests.

Key Performers

Australia

  • Don Bradman (Captain & Batsman) – Led from the front, scoring crucial runs throughout the series.
  • Bill O’Reilly (Leg-Spin Bowler) – Spearheaded the bowling attack, taking vital wickets in the comeback.
  • Clarrie Grimmett (Leg-Spin Bowler) – Partnered O’Reilly to dominate England’s batting.
  • Stan McCabe (Batsman) – Provided pivotal innings, including in the third Test at Melbourne.
  • Lindsay Hassett (Batsman) – Important middle-order contributions in the latter Tests.

England

  • Wally Hammond (Batsman & Captain in parts) – Scored heavily in the first two Tests.
  • Stan Worthington (All-Rounder) – Useful contributions with both bat and ball.
  • Maurice Leyland (Batsman) – Provided stability in England’s top order.
  • Hedley Verity (Bowler) – Took key wickets early in the series.
