2023 Ind v Aus Test series

Show Event Category Summary

India and Australia share one of Test cricket’s fiercest and most compelling rivalries, built on shifting power, great players, and unforgettable contests since their first series in 1947–48.

For decades Australia dominated, especially at home, with the exploits of Bradman, Lillee, Warne, McGrath and Ponting shaping results.

India’s fortress was their own turning wickets, where the spin of Bedi, Chandrasekhar, Kumble and Harbhajan flipped many series.

The rivalry transformed in the 2000s as India, led by stars like Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman and Sehwag, began challenging Australia on equal terms, producing classics such as Kolkata 2001 and Adelaide 2003.

Over time the contests grew spikier, more tactical, and deeply narrative-driven. The modern era — highlighted by India’s back-to-back series wins in Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21 — has seen India emerge as Australia’s most formidable opponent, with both sides consistently producing high-intensity cricket, dramatic shifts in momentum, and some of the most iconic series in the game’s history.

Since 1997, the series has been contested for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

2023 Ind v Aus Test series

India hosted Australia from February–March 2023 in a series dominated by spin, dramatic collapses, and a rare drawn Test at Ahmedabad. India were led by Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins was the Australian captain.

India retained the Border–Gavaskar Trophy with a 2–1 series victory over Australia in early 2023, a contest defined by sharp turn, fluctuating momentum, and decisive individual brilliance.

India dominated the opening two Tests in Nagpur and Delhi, powered by Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, whose relentless spin dismantled Australia in critical phases.

Australia struck back in Indore, with Matthew Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon exploiting a raging turner to secure a rare nine-wicket win, before the series settled into a high-scoring draw on a benign surface at Ahmedabad, where Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli all posted major hundreds.

Jadeja’s all-round consistency earned him Player of the Series, while India’s resilience under pressure ensured their fourth straight Border–Gavaskar triumph and sealed their place in the 2023 World Test Championship final.
