The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

1982/83 Ashes

The 1982/83 Ashes series in Australia was a 5-Test contest, remembered for its fierce competitiveness, brilliant individual performances, and one of the most dramatic finishes in Ashes history at the MCG when England won by 3 runs.

Australia, led by Greg Chappell, won the series 2–1 to regain the Ashes from England led by Bob Willis.

Standout Performers:

  • Allan Border (AUS) – 317 runs including crucial innings under pressure with 62 not out at the MCG.
  • Greg Chappell (AUS) – 2 centuries in the series with 389 runs.
  • David Gower (ENG) – 441 runs, elegant but not enough to tip the balance.
  • Geoff Lawson (AUS) – Took 34 wickets.
  • Bob Willis - Led England well and took 18 wickets.
  • Norman Cowans (ENG) – Breakout performance, taking 6-77 in Melbourne.
  • Ian Botham (ENG) - 270 runs with the bat and 18 wickets.
