Francois (Faf) Du Plessis was born on 13 July 1984 in Pretoria. He is a all-rounder who bats right handed with an unorthodox grip, and bowls leg spin.
Du Plessis made his first class debut in 2003/04 and he made his international debut for South Africa against India at Cape Town in the 3rd ODI on 18th Jan 2011.
Making his Test debut against Australia in November 2012, he became the fourth South African to score a Test century on debut as South Africa retained their No 1 Test ranking by defeating Australia.
Du Plessis was subsequently named captain of South Africa for the following Twenty20 series against New Zealand and confirmed full time skipper in Feb 2013.
He took over as captain of the Test team for the tour of Australia in 2016 when A B de Villiers was struck down by injury. He led South Africa to a 2-1 series win. During the 2nd Test in Hobart, du Plessis was cited by the ICC on a ball tampering charge for which he was subsequently found to be guilty.
On 17 February 2021, du Plessis announced his retirement from Test cricket. He captained South Africa in 36 Tests, securing 18 wins and losing 15 Tests.
