Charles Townsend was a thin tall left handed batsman and leg break bowler. He played for Clifton College aged 15 and made his first class debut for Gloucestershire aged 18 in 1893.
His off-side strokes were particularly effective, and his driving allowed him to score at a consistent pace throughout his major innings.
Townsend had a glorious summer in 1899. He scored 2,440 runs in First Class cricket, averaged 51, stroked nine centuries, including one for Gentlemen v. Players. He took 101 wickets. He was also selected for his Test debut against Australia at Lords.
Townsend was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year for 1899.
Townsend trained as a solicitor and eventually gave up his cricket career to concentrate on practicing the law. He died on 17 October 1958.
