History of Tamil union Cricket & Athletic club of Sri Lanka
On the 2nd day of November 1895 a few of the Tamil young men of Colombo mostly students organized a Sports Club under the name of Lanka sports club which had Price Park as its playground.Early in the year 1899 this club changed its name to the "Tamil sports Club" and about a year before another Club under the name of "The Tamil Cricket Club" was organized. This Club had Campbell Park as it's playground. Mr. Jacob Navaratnaraja was the first Captain. This Club had the valuable assistance of the members of the Rockwood family who did great service for the advancement of the Club. Neither of these Clubs could put forward a team to meet any of the then existing Clubs or Colleges in spite of the fact that each of the Clubs had a few good cricketers. It may be interesting to mention one of the earliest matches played by the Tamil Sports club which met a team of St. Benedict's Institute now St. Benedict's College on the school ground
