Infamous Grovel remark: Tony Greig fires up Windies

England skipper Tony Greig caused a huge controversy in the lead up to the 1976 series against the West Indies.

Appearing on television to discuss the comingsummer Greig's inflamatory words landed him in hot water when he attempted to highlight theWest Indies players' reputation for wilting under pressure. The word 'grovel' had sinister connotations for West Indian people many of whom have slave ancestry.

Rarely has an attempt to psyche out an opposition failed sospectacularly. The West Indian fast bowlers took great delight in adding yardsto their run up when Greig came to the wicket and their supporters took equaldelight when his wicket was captured.

Ha, Ha. No wonder the Windies got so fired up. Greig just did not realise the true impact of his ill-chosen words ahead of this series.
