1984: Hadlee inspires first ever home win for NZ over England (Christchurch)

The second Test of the 1984 series between New Zealand and England was played at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, from February 3 to 5, 1984, and turned into one of New Zealand’s most dominant and historical Test victories.

New Zealand’s defeat of England was their first home Test win (and only their second overall) against England in 54 years of Test history.

Batting first, New Zealand piled up 307, built around an outstanding 99 from Richard Hadlee and 82 from Martin Crowe, while Ian Botham took 4 for 87.

England’s reply was disastrous — they collapsed to 82 all out, with Hadlee tearing through the top order to claim 5 for 28.

Forced to follow on, England fared no better in their second innings, bundled out for 93, as Hadlee struck again with 3 for 16 and Ewen Chatfield added 3 for 25.

New Zealand triumphed by an innings and 132 runs.
