England completed their first innings for 384 on Day 2 of the Ashes Test at the SCG, built around a commanding Joe Root 160, with Harry Brook contributing 84 after the pair extended their overnight partnership.

Australia then replied solidly to reach 166 for 2 at stumps, trimming the deficit to 218, with Travis Head unbeaten on 91 continuing his fine series and Marnus Labuschagne scoring 48 before a late dismissal.

It was a full, competitive day after the rain disruptions of Day 1, leaving the match evenly poised heading into Day 3.

Australia 166 for 2 (Head 91*, Stokes 2-30) trail England 384 (Root 160, Brook 84, Neser 4-60) by 218 runs.
