South Africa pip Afghanistan in thrilling double super over: T20 World Cup No 13 ...

South Africa and Afghanistan served up a dramatic thriller in Group D at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad, with the match ending tied at 187 all after 20 overs.

South Africa posted 187/6, powered by big contributions from Quinton de Kock (59) and Ryan Rickelton (61) as their batters applied sustained pressure on the Afghan bowling attack. Afghanistan responded superbly in their chase, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scoring with 84 to keep his side right in the contest deep into the innings.

With neither team able to be separated in normal play, the contest went to a **Super Over — and remarkably to a second Super Over — before South Africa eventually edged Afghanistan by the smallest of margins to claim a dramatic victory. It was one of the standout games of the tournament so far, showcasing big-hit batting and nerve-shredding finishes.

South Africa 187 for 6 (Rickelton 61, de Kock 59, Omarzai 3-41, Rashid 2-28) beat Afghanistan187 (Gurbaz 84, Ngidi 3-26) in the Super Over.
