Matt Renshaw led a late fightback as Australia finished Day 1 of the first Test against South Africa under pressure at 187/6 after being sent in to bat.
South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack kept the visitors under pressure, with Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje taking two wickets apiece.
Marnus Labuschagne scored 37 and Steve Smith made 25, but Australia struggled to build substantial partnerships as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Matt Renshaw and captain Pat Cummins provided a late fightback, combining for an unbroken 63-run partnership to give Australia some hope heading into Day 2. Renshaw was unbeaten on 46 from 115 balls, while Cummins had contributed 33 not out from 72 deliveries.
Australia will aim to turn their late resistance into a competitive first-innings total, while South Africa will look to strike early and finish off the lower order.
Stumps Australia 187 for 6 (Renshaw 46*, Labuschagne 37, Cummins 33*, Mulder 2-31) vs South Africa.
