South Africa struggle against Boland, face uphill battle: 2nd Test, Day 2 (Port Elizabeth)

Scott Boland was the ace again as South Africa struggled against Australia’s formidable pace attack on Day 2 of the rain-affected second Test at St George’s Park, Gqeberha, closing at 97/5 after just 30.4 overs of play.

Resuming at 20/2, the hosts lost three more wickets as Scott Boland continued his impressive spell, finishing with outstanding figures of 4/31.

Mitchell Starc provided further pressure by dismissing Matthew Breetzke for four, while Ryan Rickelton made 31 before falling to a spectacular one-handed catch by Matt Renshaw at slip.

Captain Temba Bavuma remained unbeaten on 41, offering determined resistance after South Africa slumped to 40/4. He shared a valuable 52-run partnership with Rickelton before Boland struck again, leaving Wiaan Mulder unbeaten on two at stumps.

Persistent rain and a sodden outfield delayed the start by several hours, severely restricting the day’s play. Nevertheless, Australia maintained a firm grip on the contest, with South Africa facing an uphill task to rebuild their innings on Day 3.

South Africa 97 for 5 (Bavuma 41*, Mulder 2*, Boland 4-31) vs Australia.
