Jacques Kallis was unbeaten on 78 before rain stopped play with the hosts on 299 for five with 13 overs remaining.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja put a clamp on the scoring rate and picked up four for 87.

South Africa 299 for 5 (Kallis 78*, Jadeja 4-87) trail India 334 by 35 runs.
