Cook, Ballance put England on top: 3rd Test, D1 (Southampton)

Under pressure skipper Alastair Cook (95) fell short of a first Test hundred in 14 months as England controlled the first day thru another brilliant century from Gary Ballance.

Cook had a stand of 158 with Gary Ballance, who moved to his third ton in five Tests to lead England to 247-2.

England 247 for 2 (Cook 95, Ballance 104*) v India.
