Allrounder Ben Stokes smashed the second new ball around as he cantered to 74 not out from 93 balls to ensure England ended at a commanding 317-5.
Earlier, Alex Hales (60), Joe Root (50) and Nick Compton (45) all failed to kick on and England slipped to 223-5.
