Herath spins out Aussies to snatch shock win: 1st Test, Day 5 (Kandy)

Veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath (5-54) bowled Sri Lanka to a shock victory over the No 1 ranked Australians.

This was just the second Test triumph for Sri Lanka in 27 matches across the 33-year-history between the teams.

As dark clouds swirled late in the day, the injured Steven O’Keefe and Peter Nevill dug in for the ninth wicket in scoring just four runs off 178 balls before Sri Lanka snatched the win.

Sri Lanka 117 (Lyon 3-12, Hazlewood 3-21) and 353 (Mendis 176, Starc 4-84) beat Australia 203 (Voges 47, Herath 4-49, Sandakan 4-58) and 161 (Smith 55, Herath 5-54) by 106 runs.
