Archer hits Smith on head, redefines Ashes series: 2nd Test, Day 4 (Lords)

Debutant speedster Jofra Archer bowled with fire and pace to deliver a blow to the neck of Steve Smith.

After Smith returned from his injury induced retirement, Chris Woakes dismissed him lbw eight runs short of a third century of the series. Australia were bowled out for 250, handing a slender 8 run lead to England.

Smith was was taken to hospital later in the day for an X-ray for an arm injury – also sustained from an Archer short ball.

Pat Cummins removed Jason Roy and Joe Root in successive balls. England scraped to 96-4 - a lead of 104.

England 258 and 96 for 4 (Stokes 16*, Buttler 10*) lead Australia 250 (Smith 92, Broad 4-65) by 104 runs.
