Pope, Root smash centuries in run feast: 2nd Test, Day 3 (Trent Bridge)

Brilliant centuries from Joe Root and Ollie Pope kept New Zealand at bay.

Root, in a rich vein of form, struck 163 not out and Pope vindicated his selection at number three with 145. They had a third-wicket stand of 187.

Skipper Ben Stokes smashed 46 from only 33 balls as England added 383 runs, the home side ending 473-5.

England 473 for 5 (Root 163*, Pope 145, Lees 67, Boult 3-89) trail New Zealand 553 (Mitchell 190, Blundell 106, Anderson 3-62) by 80 runs
