The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.” 

1881/82 Ashes

This was the fourth series of Test matches ever played (and the third in Australia). It featured four stand-alone Tests (not yet called the “Ashes”). Alfred Shaw led England and Billy Murdoch was the Australia skipper.

England making a strong comeback after losing the opening games. The series ended 2-2.

Series Highlights

  • Billy Murdoch (Australia) was the standout batsman, scoring a superb 124 in the opening Test and consistently leading Australia’s batting.
  • Fred Spofforth (Australia) again lived up to his nickname “The Demon Bowler”, taking 7/46 in the first Test and finishing as the leading wicket-taker.
  • George Ulyett (England) provided key all-round performances, including vital half-centuries and key wickets in England’s two victories.
