On 25 June 1932, India started its journey in international Cricket as a Test-playing nation, making its debut against England at Lord's. The series is fought over two trophies: 

Anthony de Mello Trophy:
This trophy was awarded for the Test series played between India and England when the series is held in India.
 
Pataudi Trophy:
This trophy was awarded when the Test series between India and England is played in England.
 
In June 2025, the ECB and BCCI decided to award the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy to the winning team.
 
 
1986 ENG v IND Tests

The 1986 India tour of England was a landmark Test series in Indian cricket history. India won the 3-match Test series 2–0, marking only their second Test series win in England (after 1971).  

Kapil Dev's team landed on English shores to face a strong English side under the leadership of Mike Gatting and David Gower.

The Key Performers were:

India

  • Dilip Vengsarkar:
    • Scored three consecutive centuries at Lord’s (including 1986)
    • 2 centuries in the series; top scorer with 360 runs
  • Kapil Dev:
    • Led aggressively; contributed with both bat and ball
    • Key spells of swing bowling and crucial runs
  • Chetan Sharma:
    • Match-winning 5-wicket haul at Lord’s
  • Maninder Singh:
    • Effective left-arm spin at Leeds

England

  • Struggled against India’s bowling
  • Lacked major batting contributions besides individual flashes from Gower and Lamb
  • Captain David Gower came under criticism for leadership and was sacked after the 2nd Test.
