1979 ENG v IND Tests

Srinivas Venkatraghavan led India to England in 1979. The tourists played four Test matches and lost the series to England 1-0 with three Tests drawn.

England led by Mike Brealey won the First Test at Edgbaston by an innings and 83 runs. The Second Test at Lord's, the Third Test at Headingley and the Fourth Test at The Oval were all drawn.

The series highlight was at the Oval in the final Test. Chasing a record 438 for an unlikely win, Sunil Gavaskar hit a brilliant double century and notched up the highest score by an Indian in Tests against England at that time. India needed 49 runs off 46 balls with just an hour to go for the match to end. However, Gavaskar fell for 221 to Ian Botham and India fell short by 9 runs at 429-8.
